ATLANTA (APRIL 10) - Kilpatrick Stockton LLP announces the firm's third annual pro bono awards to recognize outstanding contributions to the firm's pro bono efforts. The awards highlight a second record-breaking year for the firm, with more than 27,500 pro bono hours in 2005, a value of $8.2 million.
"Pro bono is an essential element of the firm," said Debbie Segal, Kilpatrick Stockton Pro Bono Partner. "These awards recognize our attorneys' strong commitment to helping those in our surrounding communities who otherwise would have very limited access to representation in the legal system. Their dedication has made a positive impact on many lives."
The following are the 2005 recipients of the Kilpatrick Stockton Pro Bono Awards:
Pro Bono Managing Partner Award: Seth Cohen, Atlanta
Seth Cohen, an associate in the Corporate department, initiated Kilpatrick Stockton's representation of the challengers to the Georgia Voter ID law. He was co-lead counsel with Emmet Bondurant, a renowned litigator from Bondurant, Mixson & Elmore LLP. Together, they led a team of lawyers across the state, successfully and publicly challenging the law in federal court . Cohen spent 256 pro bono hours, billed more than 1900 hours and donated an additional 500 hours to community organizations.
Cohen was recently recognized by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) with the Stuart Eisenstadt Young Lawyer Award. This award recognizes a practicing attorney in the metro Atlanta area who has "gone above and beyond their legal practice in furtherance of ADL's steadfast mission to seek justice and fair treatment for all citizens alike."
Pro Bono Associate of the Year Award: Adj Awotwi, Atlanta
Adj Awotwi was chosen for her representation of seven unrelated children who were charged with Truancy in Juvenile Court. She spent 267 pro bono hours representing these children and advocating for their legal and social needs, while devoting more than 1800 hours to billable matters.
