  • Organization: LawFuel Press Release Service
Baker & McKenzie LLP volunteer attorneys and staff will join Habitat for Humanity International and Habitat partner families in building homes in 9 cities in North America for its Fifth Annual Day in Service. On May 6, Firm volunteers from Dallas, New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco/Palo Alto will participate in builds. Baker & McKenzie volunteers in Houston, Miami, Toronto and Calgary will follow on May 13, and in Washington, D.C., on June 10.

"We at Baker & McKenzie are proud of our five-year relationship with Habitat for Humanity. For over 50 years, Baker & McKenzie has been committed to enriching the communities where we live and work," said Angela Vigil, North American Director of Pro Bono & Public Service. "Every bit counts in helping families in need of affordable homes to eliminate homelessness and fight poverty."

At each build site, Baker & McKenzie volunteers will once again assist with carpentry, landscaping, painting, roofing and other activities to build homes to be purchased by families in need of adequate housing. The Firm's offices will also host additional events to raise money for Habitat and Humanity. For the past four years, Baker & McKenzie's annual Day in Service has drawn a total of more than 1000 volunteers, who have assisted in the construction of more than 30 homes.

This year, in addition to a build and fundraiser, the Firm's Toronto office will host its first-ever Pro Bono Week (May 15 - 19) and will launch a new pro bono project: the Habitat for Humanity Wills Clinic. At the Wills Clinic, Baker & McKenzie Toronto lawyers and staff will partner with Firm client, Manulife Financial, and estates lawyers from Schnurr Kirsch Stephens, to provide wills and powers of attorney for families who have received homes through Habitat for Humanity. Pro Bono Law Ontario provided assistance in bringing people together and logistical support for this project.

David Hackett, Baker & McKenzie LLP's North American Managing Partner commented, "We are very excited to be partnering with Habitat for Humanity once again. Our participation in a distinct way not only builds camaraderie among our Firm volunteers, but makes a long-lasting contribution to our communities across the U.S. and Canada."

Baker & McKenzie's Pro Bono and Public Service Initiative focuses on delivering the highest quality of legal services to the underserved and disadvantaged by fostering an environment that encourages and promotes public service. In addition, the initiative promotes and sponsors activities, which provide opportunities for all Firm personnel, independently, and in partnership with its clients, to contribute to the well being of the community.
