On June 20, 2008, the first Plain Language Training for the New York Unified Court System was sponsored by the Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for Justice Initiatives for a small group of court personnel and a few staff from non-profit entities who work with the courts. Participants from different parts of the state and with different job responsibilities were selected for the training. Maria Mindlin of Transcend, who was selected by Legal Services Corporation and the State Justice Institute to conduct a plain language training at their Technology Initiative Conference in January, 2008, was the instructor. Maria creates plain language forms for the courts of California, Utah, Texas, Alabama, and Ohio. The Conference provided Participants with Readability Books and copies of Richard C. Wydick's Plain English for Lawyers as a resource to use in the future. The goal of the training was to equip key court personnel to evaluate the readability of existing court materials and to create forms, brochures, and interactive interviews and instruction sheets that are easier to read and understand.
