Operating on the assumption that parents with little money and legal problems on their mind may be distracted from focusing on the health of their children, Pro Bono Law Ontario and The Hospital for Sick Children have launched the Family Legal Health Program to offer legal assistance that addresses the non-medical issues that may impact a child's health or a family's capacity to care for a sick child. The unique partnership is the first of its kind in Canada, and features a free legal service located at SickKids.

The program trains health care workers to identify cases that may require legal intervention; refers families to a lawyer whose office is at the Hospital; offers legal information to families who need it; and provides access to legal services through the onsite lawyer or a referral to pro bono lawyers or other legal services in the community. The onsite lawyer will also meet with families at the child's bedside if necessary.
