Pro Bono Law Ontario Teams Up with BAR-eX on Free CLE Webcasts

Toronto - September 8, 2005 – On September 27, 2005 the Ontario legal community can access the first of four free CLE online courses containing guidance, best practices and instruction on how to provide legal services pro bono publico for individuals and organizations in need.

“While many lawyers volunteer their time and expertise, there are many more practitioners throughout Ontario who want to take on pro bono work but are uncertain how best to go about it,” said Lynn Burns, Executive Director of Pro Bono Law Ontario (PBLO). “Using the BAR-eX online services, PBLO will be offering four online CLE courses this year – each designed to brief lawyers on how to most effectively conduct pro bono work as well as upgrade their skills in high-demand practice areas such as child advocacy.”

The first online course, entitled “Pro Bono Law Ontario CAP CLE”, instructs lawyers on conducting work on behalf of The Child Advocacy Project (CAP).  The Child Advocacy Project is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the legal rights of children and youth across Ontario.  CAP lawyers provide free legal services to students who are involved in the Special Education process; children and youth at risk of being suspended or expelled; and young people who are living independently.  CAP is a registered project of PBLO, and is conducted in partnership with Justice for Children and Youth (a legal aid clinic) and The Advocates’ Society.  The course will be available at www.bar-ex.com starting September 27.  The on-demand format lets users access the course from anywhere they can access the Internet, at anytime day or night.

“The CAP CLE on-demand course will help PBLO create a pool of volunteer lawyers across the province who are trained to take on CAP cases in their own communities,” said Burns.  “Being able to offer these courses online at www.bar-ex.com  will allow PBLO to train volunteer lawyers in their own communities. And because BAR-eX is donating their services, PBLO can conduct these valuable training sessions across the province without cost to our organization or our audience.”

“We are very pleased to be assisting Pro Bono Law Ontario,” said Susan Elliott, President of BAR-eX Communications Inc.  “Offering online Pro Bono Law Ontario CLE sessions is a great opportunity for BAR-eX to play an active role in improving access to justice across the province.”

To access the Pro Bono Law Ontario CAP CLE webcast go to www.bar-ex.com on September 27th.  A link to the course will be available on the BAR-eX homepage.    First-time visitors to the BAR-eX site are invited to register as a member.  BAR-eX membership is free.
